Jazz Summit 2005
The Jazz Bands of Pioneer High School, Ypsilanti High School, and Huron High School, in conjunction with The Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, presented Jazz Summit 2005 on May 25 in Meyers Audtorium at Huron High School.
The Pioneer Jazz Band led off the evening six selections that showed off their amazing individual and ensemble talents. Director David A. Leach had the group swinging with vibrant styke and finesse.
Pioneer’s fine singers were featured in several songs, while instrumental soloists demonstrated their improvisational skills throughout each number.
Guest artist Dennis E. Wilson, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Michigan, joined each of the schools’ jazz band for a special number featuring his trombone virtuosity. Wilson has a significant history with the legendary Count Basie and his Orchestra, and has toured extensively with many major jazz ensembles. The audience was delighted by his wonderful performances and cordial words of encouragement to the young band students.
Following fine performances by the Ypsilanti and Huron High School Jazz Bands, everyone moved over to the Huron Media Center to enjoy an afterglow spread of delectable treats graciously donated by area food merchants. Directors Courtney K. Snyder (Ypsilanti), David A. Leach (Pioneer), and Stephen E. Roberts (Huron) joined the students, families and friends at the Afterglow to mingle and talk shop.
