The Pioneer Band Association syndicates its news via RSS feeds. Read more about it below, including one band parent’s experience in using it.
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML language that, when used in combination with specialized software packages called RSS readers or News aggregators, allows a user to subscribe to a web site and receive real time quick summaries whenever the site is updated. These syndicated updates are called “feeds.”
There are lots of user-friendly ways to subscribe to RSS feeds. Recent browser releases (Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Safari, etc.) have built-in RSS readers, along with simple instructions and subscription interfaces to get you started. Or you could register with a server/web-based aggregator like BlogLines (www.bloglines.com) or Google Reader (www.google.com/reader), or install a stand-alone reader directly on your computer. If you use email programs like Outlook or Thunderbird, you can even view RSS content in a way that is very similar to reading the messages in your Inbox. The subscription method that works best for you is largely a matter of personal choice.
Web sites that publish an RSS feed are usually identified by the use of words like “syndicate this site” followed by a tiny box or button labeled “RSS” or “XML.” Clicking on the RSS/XML button will take you to an XML page (which, depending on your browser, will either be nicely formatted or look like a bunch of cryptic code). Either way, you can add the site’s RSS feed to your reader (aggregate the site’s content), by copying the web “address” (URL) of the RSS/XML page and pasting it into your reader’s subscription area. The software will then automatically retrieve and display that site’s latest news/updates (RSS feeds).

Happy aggregation!

“I use RSS Bandit to keep up with the latest on an internal Wiki site where I work. Adding a subscription to the Pioneer Bands web site was easy. First I created a *Band* category in Bandit. Then I went to this web page and just clicked on the *Concert Band* link, copied the URL, went back to Bandit and added a new subscription. I pasted the URL into the slot in the wizard and let Bandit *discover and verify the feed.* I changed the title to *Concert Band* and voila! I am alerted whenever there is a new posting for Concert Band members. RSS Bandit is free - you can download it from here: www.rssbandit.org“
