The Centennial Concert

Ann Arbor High School Band 2013In the fall of 1913, Ann Arbor High School's football team, the Pioneers, faced off against the Big Reds of Muskegon. Making its appearance on the field that day was the 18-member Ann Arbor High School Band — its first-ever performance.

Now, in our 2013-14 season, we celebrate the centennial of this landmark event. We celebrate a century of excellence that was born that day, laying the groundwork for today's band programs at Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High Schools.

CentennialIn an historic gala concert in Hill Auditorium, the Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High School Bands — conducted by David Leach, Stephen Roberts and Jason Smith respectively — and the Community High Jazz Band led by Jack Wagner, will perform and pay tribute to the pioneering efforts of the 1913–14 Ann Arbor High School band.

Also performing will be the All-City Centennial Band, featuring top musicians from all the high schools. It will be performing the world premiere, commissioned by the Huron, Pioneer and Skyline Band Associations, of VULCAN for Concert Band by GRAMMY Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty, professor of composition at the University of Michigan School of Music Theater and Dance.

This performance is free and open to the public.

The AAPS Bands Centennial Concert is Thursday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Hill Auditorium
